Gregory S. DuPont, JD, CFP

A Columbus native who has practiced Ohio estate and tax law since 1992, and who became a Certified Financial Planner because being the lawyer was not enough to protect the people who trusted him.

The turn

One trust dispute changed how he practiced.

Greg practiced estate planning, tax and probate law for years before this firm existed, and watched the same failure repeat: families losing ground not because a document was drafted wrong, but because the estate plan and the financial plan were never built against each other.

One trust dispute ended it. The family had estate planning documents and they had financial advisors. What they did not have was one professional they trusted to coordinate the two, accountable for how the pieces fit together. Watching what that cost them, he resolved it would not happen to anyone who trusted him as their attorney.

So he left his law firm and spent three years inside a national financial planning firm, learning the half of the job most attorneys refer out. He left that firm in 2009 to build something with no institutional or product bias, and took the additional testing to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ five years after that. He describes himself as “a friend in the law”, which is easier when the people you serve are, as he puts it, genuinely your friends and family.

In his own words

“Most advisors operate from a limited toolbox… The client’s problem becomes secondary to the product.”
Gregory S. DuPont, interviewed in International Business Times, February 26, 2026.

The record

Dated, and checkable.

Every line below is a year, an institution, and something that either happened or did not.

  1. 1989

    BS, Business Administration

The Ohio State University. Finance and accounting, which is why the tax side of this practice is not outsourced.

  2. 1992

    Juris Doctorate

Capital University College of Law. Estate planning, taxation and alternative dispute resolution.

  3. 2007

    His own practice

Estate, tax and probate work on his own terms, and a separate entity from the wealth firm that followed.

  4. 2009

    Advocate Wealth Solutions

Left the national financial planning firm he had joined to learn that side of the work, and formed DuPont Wealth Solutions (now Advocate Wealth Solutions) with no institutional or product bias.

  5. 2014

    CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™

Took the additional testing rather than refer the financial half of every question out.

  6. 2025

    DuPont Law Group

The estate planning law firm, in Dublin, so the attorney drafting the trust is in the building.

What he built

Five firms.

Four of the five are the four disciplines (law, tax, insurance and investment), and one person founded all of them.

The fifth exists because he thinks other attorneys should practice this way too.

Plain answers

What people ask about the credentials.

The two-credential thing prompts the same handful of questions, so here they are in full.

  • Is Gregory DuPont an attorney or a financial advisor?

Both, and that is the point. He holds a Juris Doctorate from Capital University College of Law (1992) and has been a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ since 2014. He is admitted to the bar in Ohio and practices estate and tax law through DuPont Law Group while running Advocate Wealth Solutions as a fee-based planning firm.

  • Why does the JD and CFP combination matter?

Because the two halves of a retirement plan are usually decided by two people who never speak. An estate attorney will not advise on a portfolio; an investment advisor will not draft a trust or model a Roth conversion window. Holding both credentials means the legal structure and the money decision are made by one person who answers for the result.

  • Where is he licensed, and how do I check?

Ohio. His investment-adviser record is public on the SEC’s adviser-information site, which is linked in the footer of every page here. Bar standing is verifiable through the Supreme Court of Ohio’s attorney directory.

  • What is Advocate Wealth Solutions’ relationship to DuPont Law Group?

They are separate firms founded by the same person. Advocate Wealth Solutions (2009) does the wealth, tax and insurance work; DuPont Law Group (2025) does the legal drafting. Keeping them separate is a licensing and compliance requirement; running both is what makes the family office an attorney-led one rather than a referral arrangement.

  • Does he work with families outside Ohio?

Advocate Wealth Solutions operates nationwide. The office is in Dublin, Ohio, and a lot of clients choose it precisely because they can sit across a desk from the person managing their money, but the planning work is not limited to Ohio residents. Legal work through DuPont Law Group is Ohio.
